NJ Electrical Permit Checklist: Everything You Need Before You File

Filing an NJ electrical permit application with missing documents means waiting days or weeks for a deficiency notice. This checklist covers everything you need for F120, PSE&G ESI, and common residential permit types — so you file complete the first time.

Filing a permit application with missing information is one of the most preventable causes of permit delays in New Jersey. The application comes back with a deficiency notice, you resubmit, and you've lost a week or two in the process.

Use this checklist before every NJ electrical permit submission to make sure your application is complete on day one.

F120 Electrical Permit — Required for Every Submission

Contractor information:

  • [ ] Licensed NJ Electrical Contractor name (must match DCA license exactly)
  • [ ] NJ Electrical Contractor license number
  • [ ] Certificate of Insurance (COI) — must be current, must name the correct insured entity
  • [ ] Business address and contact information

Property information:

  • [ ] Full service address (street, municipality, zip code)
  • [ ] Block and lot number (found on property tax records or municipal GIS)
  • [ ] Ownership information (property owner name and address)
  • [ ] Zoning classification (some municipalities require this)

Scope of work:

  • [ ] Clear, specific description of all work to be performed
  • [ ] Service size (if service work is involved — current and proposed amperage)
  • [ ] Number of circuits added or modified
  • [ ] Job value (used to calculate permit fee)

Fee calculation:

  • [ ] Estimated job value
  • [ ] Permit fee calculated per municipal fee schedule (typically 2–3% of job value, minimum $75–$150)
  • [ ] Payment method confirmed (check, cash, or credit card — varies by municipality)

Supporting documents (scope-dependent):

  • [ ] Load calculation (required for service upgrades in most municipalities)
  • [ ] Panel schedule (required for panel replacement)
  • [ ] Single-line riser diagram (required for commercial and multifamily in many municipalities)
  • [ ] Engineer-stamped drawings (required for commercial and 5+ unit multifamily)

PSE&G ESI Application — Required for All Service Work in PSE&G Territory

File this the same day as the F120. Do not wait for the F120 to be approved.

  • [ ] Confirmed the property is in PSE&G territory (check the customer's bill)
  • [ ] Service address
  • [ ] Current service size and proposed service size
  • [ ] Licensed electrician NJ license number and contact
  • [ ] PSE&G account number for the property (from customer bill)
  • [ ] Description of work (service upgrade, service change, new service, meter relocation)
  • [ ] Load calculation for service increases (PSE&G may request this)
  • [ ] Confirmation of meter socket type and height

If JCP&L territory: File the JCP&L ESI application instead, same day as F120. JCP&L has its own portal and application process.

---

JCP&L ESI Application — Required for Service Work in JCP&L Territory

JCP&L serves most of Union County, parts of Bergen and Middlesex County. Confirm utility before filing.

  • [ ] Confirmed the property is in JCP&L territory (check the customer's bill)
  • [ ] Same documentation as PSE&G ESI above, submitted to JCP&L's portal

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my permit application is incomplete?

The municipal Construction Office will issue a deficiency notice — a written list of missing or incorrect items. You must correct the deficiencies and resubmit. Each resubmission cycle typically adds 1–2 weeks to your timeline.

Can I submit the PSE&G ESI after the F120 is issued?

Technically yes, but doing so adds the full ESI processing timeline (3–6 weeks) to your project after permits are already in hand. Always file ESI on the same day as the F120.

Do all municipalities use the same F120 form?

The F120 form is a state-standard NJ UCC application, but some municipalities use customized versions or have supplemental requirements. ClearPath checks for municipality-specific requirements before every filing.
